Early March sales of cars and light trucks made by the nation’s Big Three auto makers dipped 2.6% compared with slow sales a year ago, the companies said today.

General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Corp. said they sold cars and light trucks at an average daily rate of 27,289 during the March 1-10 period this year, compared with 29,281 during the same time last year.

Car sales fell 7.7%, and truck sales were down 5.4%.

March and April usually usher in a more buoyant car and truck buying season as Americans shake off the winter and take to the highways.
