Three-time winner Susan Butcher pushed into about a five-minute lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race as she reached Elim, Alaska.

After a short rest, she mushed on toward Nome and the final 100 miles of the 1,158-mile race. Defending champion Joe Runyan was in second place with his team of 15 dogs. Butcher had only 11, but nonetheless told race officials she thought she had a chance to break her 1987 record of 11 days 2 hours 5 minutes.

The winner is expected to reach Nome tonight.
