SDSU Blows Lead, Loses to Riverside

San Diego State’s baseball team lost a 5-0 lead and dropped a 6-5 nonconference decision to host UC Riverside Tuesday night.

Brian Greback led the Aztecs with a double and two RBIs. Riverside outhit SDSU, 13-8. UCR improved to 19-8. SDSU dropped to 14-8.

David Bladow struck out six and walked two in seven innings as host UC Irvine crushed U.S. International, 12-1, in a nonconference game in Irvine. UCI improved to 16-8. The Gulls (7-13-1) gave up five runs in the first inning.

Powered by an eight-run seventh inning, host Christ College Irvine battered Point Loma Nazarene, 17-3, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Mike Bradish had a two-run homer, and Lou Simon had a three-run home run in the seventh for Christ College (9-11, 1-2). PLNC is 8-8-1, 0-3.

The University of San Diego came back from a 9-8 loss in its first game against Wayne State and took the second, 14-2.

The Toreros scored six runs in the first inning of the second game. In the seventh inning, Rick Doane hit his fifth home run of the year. USD is 10-13; Wayne State is 3-5.

GOLF

USIU’s John Adams shot a three-under-par 69 to win the 36-hole University of San Diego Invitational, and the Gulls won the team title with a 592, a dozen shots ahead of second-place UC Irvine.

MEN’S TENNIS

SDSU’s Tole Marinkovic and Kerry Safdie recorded victories in singles and doubles as the Aztecs overpowered visiting Navy, 9-0.

Marinkovic defeated Chris Thompson, 6-3, 6-4, and Safdie defeated Pat Walker, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. SDSU improved to 10-4. Navy fell to 5-2.

UC San Diego swept all singles and doubles matches at the Tritons shut out Principia of Illinois, 9-0.

Sig Huber defeated Gavin Barton, 7-5, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Chris Belloli easily handled Darren Poznick, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 2 singles.

No. 1 doubles Francois Monnar and Tim Ditzler won at No. 1 doubles. UCSD is 4-5.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Sixteenth-ranked USD defeated Texas A&M;, 6-2, in a nonconference match at USD’s West Courts. The Toreras won five of six singles matches. Junior Tonya Fuller, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, won her 11th singles match of the season. USD improved to 6-3.
