Pavarotti Gets Royal Welcome: Luciano Pavarotti, whose last engagement at London’s Royal Opera House hit a sour note, made a triumphant return in one of his favorite roles Tuesday after a seven-year absence. As Nemorino in Donizetti’s comic opera “L’Elisir d’Amore,” the tenor received rapturous applause from a sell-out audience that included Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Pavarotti got his first big break at the Royal Opera in 1963 when its casting manager signed him to sing Rodolfo in “La Boheme.” He roused public wrath 20 years later when he pulled out of Royal Opera’s “Tosca” at the last minute, complaining he was allergic to dusty stages, then promptly flew to Australia to appear in “La Boheme.”
