Fund-Raising Drive to Aid Soviets Settling in Israel

Orthodox Jewish leaders kicked off a fund-raising drive in Los Angeles on Wednesday to aid Soviet Jews resettling in Israel.

“This is a historic opportunity for the Jewish community to assist the state of Israel in the absorption of hundreds of thousands of Jews leaving the Soviet Union,” said Rabbi Max Schrier, president of the Rabbinical Council of America.

Schrier said he came to Los Angeles to encourage member rabbis to get their congregations to contribute to a nationwide fund-raising drive being organized by the United Jewish Appeal, which coordinates Jewish philanthropic activities. Los Angeles Jews will be expected to raise about $36 million of the $420 million goal of “Operation Exodus,” Schrier said.

The UJA decided to issue a special appeal because Soviet emigration to Israel has jumped dramatically.
