Brentwood : Landfill Housing Rejected

A plan to build 165 housing units near an old landfill in Mission Canyon was rejected by the Planning and Land Use Management Committee of the Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday.

Councilman Marvin Braude, who represents the area, spoke against the developer’s appeal of a previous rejection by the Planning Commission. The appeal will now go to the council for consideration next week.

H. Randall Stoke, a spokesman for the developer, Barclay-Hollander-Curci Inc./Oceanic Calif., asked for an extension until Sept. 1 to gather information from probes installed to measure potential methane problems in the landfill.

He said several scientific studies have found no problems at the landfill, which is covered by one of the south golf courses of the Mountaingate development. But the committee, which is headed by Councilman Hal Bernson, voted 3 to 0 to go along with the Planning Commission’s conclusions.

In a report, planning officials found the site to be unsuitable and “likely to cause serious public health problems.”
