MOORPARK : Trustee Opposes Sale of High School Land

Share

A Moorpark Unified School District trustee said Thursday that she disagrees with but will not fight a decision made by the school board to sell part of the old high school at below market value.

Board member Pam Castro was one of two trustees who opposed selling 1.3 acres of the old Moorpark High School to the Boys and Girls Club for $579,350. Trustee Cynthia Hubbard also opposed the decision, made after a closed session of the school board Tuesday night.

A judge last month appraised the parcel at $735,000.

“My stand has been and still is that the school district has no business selling that asset,” Castro said. “It’s a valuable piece of property.”

Included in the sale to the Boys and Girls Club are the high school gym, tennis courts and an adjacent parking lot. District officials say the club wants to convert the gym into offices.

The district now uses the campus as its continuation school. It is awaiting funding from the state Department of Education to build a new continuation high school.
