UC San Diego will name its newest research unit the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging in recognition of a $2-million gift from the Poway couple.

Approval for the name came Friday at a meeting of the University of California Board of Regents in Los Angeles.

The Steins have been strong supporters of medical research and social causes throughout the San Diego community. Their latest gift will be used to establish an endowment fund whose income will support institute activities.

In 1939, Sam Stein founded Grill Meats Inc., the first company to sell prepackaged, portion-controlled foods to restaurants. The Steins retired to Poway when the firm, later called Chef’s Pantry, was acquired by Oscar Mayer in 1980.
