COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Tops Cerritos; Pickler Gets 100th Victory

Cypress softball Coach Brad Pickler got his 100th career victory when the Chargers defeated Cerritos, 1-0, in eight innings in the first game of pool play in the Golden West softball tournament Friday at Golden West.

Pickler then improved his record to 101-52 when the Chargers defeated College of the Sequoias, 4-0, in another game Friday.

Laura Corson (9-1) pitched a two-hitter for Cypress in the first game. Kerry Callahan had two hits and an RBI in the second game for Cypress (18-2). Sally Dugas (9-1) allowed four hits for the victory.

In other Golden West tournament games:

Golden West 8, El Camino 6 (9 innings)--El Camino rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie it, 3-3, and force extra innings. Golden West scored five runs in the ninth and then hung on. Dana Cipollone had three hits, Jyll Pattinson had two hits and two RBIs and Gretchen Bock had two hits for Golden West (17-8). Tara Snyder had a two-run single to cap the ninth-inning rally for Golden West. Lisa Kaufman (9-5), despite allowing three runs in both the seventh and ninth innings, got the victory.

Golden West 8, Kings River 1--Lisa Kaufman pitched a three-hitter in a five-inning game called because of a time limit. Dana Cipollone had two hits and an RBI in the fifth when Golden West scored eight times.

Orange Coast 7, San Joaquin Delta 3--Kim Clark and Nancy Johnson each had two hits and scored two runs for OCC. Niqua Monson (4-2) pitched seven innings for the victory.

Palomar 5, Orange Coast 0--Orange Coast was held to two hits and fell to 15-4. Palomar, the defending state champion, is 20-3.

In South Coast League volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Santa Monica 0--Craig Buccola had 14 kills and Matt Lyles had 11 to lead host Orange Coast (10-1) to a 15-11, 15-11, 15-11 victory. Travis Turner had 31 assists and 19 blocks for OCC.

Golden West 3, El Camino 1--Lane Moore had 22 kills to lead host Golden West (6-5) to a 15-9, 15-4, 11-15, 15-11 victory.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s track and field:

Orange Coast 73, Fullerton 72--Chris Parmer won the 1,500 meters (4 minutes 0.8 seconds) and tied for the 800 with teammate Jose Alcaraz at 2:00 to lead host Orange Coast. Artis Williams won the 100 (10.8), the 200 (22.2) and the long jump (21 feet 5 1/2 inches) for Fullerton.

Saddleback 94, Golden West 50--Mike Allison won the 100 meters (10.9 seconds) and the 200 (22.2) for host Saddleback. Gary Kirchhoff won the shot put (53-3) and the discus (146-3) and Greg Lamb won the 800 (2:01.2) and 5,000 (16:12) for Saddleback.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s track and field:

Saddleback 125, Golden West 6--Heather Flenner won four events for host Saddleback. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 17.4 seconds, the 100 (12.8), the 200 (27.0) and the long jump (16-8).

Dejuanna Anderson won the triple jump (32-4) and the high jump (4-8) for Saddleback.

Fullerton 78, Orange Coast 58--Megan Franke won the javelin (100) and the discus (150-6) for visiting Fullerton. Debbie LePorte won the 100 (12.4) and the 200 (26.3) and Emily Thiebaud won the 100 hurdles (15.9) and 400 hurdles (1:08.6) for Fullerton.
