DANA POINT : Road Humps OKd Along Blue Lantern

Share

The steep, winding Street of the Blue Lantern, where signs warn drivers of the 25-m.p.h. speed limit, often resembles a high-speed expressway, residents say.

After listening to the pleas of seven residents, the City Council voted unanimously to install road humps and more warning signs along Blue Lantern between La Cresta Drive and Stonehill Drive. The road humps are flatter, longer versions of road bumps and are expected to cost about $10,000 to install, City Engineer Bob Sergeant said.

Road humps are the city’s second attempt to control traffic on the hilly street, which runs past Dana Hills High School. In January, 1989, after similar pleas from residents in several public hearings, the 25-m.p.h. signs were installed, and spot police enforcement was begun.

Radar measurements, however, showed that most drivers hit 35 to 40 m.p.h. between La Cresta Drive and Selva Road.

Some residents suggested blocking the street at the downhill end; others suggested increasing police enforcement. Council members agreed to install the humps on a trial basis and evaluate their effectiveness six months later.

“I think the $10,000 would be well-spent if this alleviates the problem,” Councilwoman Ingrid McGuire said.
