USIU’s 12-runs in 8th Beat Fresno State

The U.S. International baseball team collected all 12 of its runs in the eighth inning to defeat 17th ranked Fresno State, 12-7, in Fresno Tuesday. In that inning, Mike Murphy hit a single, a double and had four RBIs for USIU (9-19-1). Also for the Gulls, Mark Cisneros had two hits and three RBIs. Fresno State is 16-9.

USC, ranked sixth, got to six San Diego State pitchers for 16 hits and scored a 10-3 victory in Los Angeles.

USC improved to 19-8 and San Diego State, led by Jeff Barry, who went two for four and scored a run, fell to 16-10.

SOFTBALL

San Diego State split a double header with Utah as Michelle Wesson pitched a 3-0 shutout for SDSU in the first game. Utah won the second game, 3-1.

Wesson, who pitched 1 1/3 innings in the second game, has won eight of her last 10 and has pitched 35 1/3 scoreless innings.

Offensively, Stephanie Chapel was three for six in both games, including a two-run homer in the first inning of the first game.

Also, Jennifer Droback had a sacrifice bunt in each game for SDSU (9-16). Utah is 10-12.

The University of San Diego split a double header with LaVerne winning the first, 2-1, then losing the second, 2-1, at LaVerne. Marianne Stahl had the game-winning RBI with a triple in the top of the seventh in the first game for USD (13-7). Pitcher Tiffany Wasilowski (4-3), a Mission Bay graduate, recorded her fourth victory.

LaVerne broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning to defeat USD in the second game. June Andrews, a Madison graduate, went three for four and had the RBI for USD.

USIU split a double header with Bowling Green, losing the first game, 4-0, and winning the second, 3-0.

Pitcher Cindy Oliver got the shutout in the second game to increase her winning streak to four games. In a span of 27 innings, Oliver has given up just six hits and no runs.

Oliver also doubled in the first two runs of the game in the first inning as USIU improved to 12-15.

MEN’S TENNIS

Jose Luis Noriega defeated Yohan Hogstedt, 6-0, 6-4, in the University of San Diego’s 7-2 victory over visiting Utah. At No. 2 singles, Dan Mattera defeated Martin Tenlen, 6-4, 6-3 for USD (15-2). Noriega and J.R. Edwards defeated Chris Entzel and Brendon Bowyer, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego broke Iowa’s 14 match winning-streak by defeating the Hawkeyes, 8-1, at USD. At No. 1 singles, Tonya Fuller defeated Liz Canzoneri, 6-2, 6-1, for USD (7-5). USD’s Aby Brayton defeated Madeleine Korreman, 7-6, 6-0, at No. 2. At No. 5, Tracey Donnelly defeated Karen Lauer 6-1, 6-4, for Iowa (14-1).

Florida, ranked No. 3 in the nation, snapped USIU’s six-match winning streak by taking a 6-3 victory at USIU. USIU fell to 11-7.

MEN’S GOLF

USIU’s John Adams was one of five golfers finishing fourth (220) in the final day of the Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore. Tim Hval of Oregon finished first (216) after shooting four below par 72 in the first and third rounds.

Oregon finished first (882) in the team standings. USIU (910) tied for ninth and SDSU (914) finished 11th.
