Snipers fired on two buses near St. Louis early today, the 16th and 17th incidents of gunmen shooting at Greyhound buses since a nationwide strike against the nation’s largest intercity bus line began three weeks ago.
No one was injured in the shootings. They came a day after the company’s announcement that it has expanded passenger service to about half the routes it operated before an estimated 9,000 workers walked off their jobs March 2.
The latest gunfire took place about 2:30 a.m. on a highway 15 miles east of St. Louis. The driver told Illinois State Police that a passing vehicle occupied by two people pulled alongside the bus and four or five shots were fired.
“Two shots were fired into the side of the bus and two into the windshield,” Greyhound spokesman George Gravley said.
Earlier, at 1:20 a.m., a bus carrying 19 passengers was struck by three rounds of gunfire on Interstate 55 south of St. Louis.
