Torres Asks U.S. to Close Jet Fuel Storage Site

Share

Rep. Esteban E. Torres (D-La Puente) has asked Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney to close a Defense Department facility where millions of gallons of jet fuel are stored near residential neighborhoods in Norwalk.

In a March 15 letter to Cheney, Torres said the Defense Fuel Support Point could be dangerous in a major earthquake. He also said he is concerned about ground water contamination discovered at the site. A Defense Department spokesman said the congressman’s request will be considered, but said the facility is well-maintained and safely operated.

The facility supplies military bases in California, Nevada and Arizona through a series of pipelines and by truck. The facility has 12 tanks that can hold up to 38 million gallons of jet fuel.
