ROSSMOOR : Surgical Waste Clogs Stretch of Freeway
Blood-stained surgical clothing, blankets and bandages were strewn along a one-mile stretch of the San Gabriel River Freeway on Thursday when two boxes fell off a passing truck and broke apart, the California Highway Patrol said.
Contents of the boxes were scattered by wind and passing traffic between Katella Avenue and the San Diego Freeway, said CHP Officer Lyle Whitten.
A private cleanup firm, American Environmental Management Corp., was called in by Caltrans officials to remove debris from the 9:30 a.m. incident. County public health officials said the items posed no danger to passing motorists, Whitten said.
The CHP is investigating the origin of the boxes.
