HUNTINGTON BEACH : 3 Districts’ Teachers Rally for Solidarity

Share

About 250 teachers from three school districts involved in labor disputes held a rally Thursday, vowing to work in solidarity to settle their contracts.

Union officials said they also hope the cooperative showing will form a grass-roots base from which to push for the consolidation of four area elementary/middle school districts.

Teachers from the Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach City and Ocean View districts gathered at the Ocean View High School parking lot, from where they marched down Warner and Golden West avenues, carrying protest signs, to Murdy Park for the 20-minute rally.

“This is a first step for us, not only in working for fair and equitable contracts in all three of our districts, but as a basis for political action--to elect school board members who care about teachers. Even after we finally win fair contracts, we need to continue this effort through November,” Carol Halbach, president of the Ocean View Teachers Assn., told the crowd.

Officials said afterward that consolidation of the four districts, including Westminster School District, will be a primary issue in the union’s recruitment and backing of school board candidates this year.
