Chargers Look at Lansford; Scout Named

Share

Charger General Manager Bobby Beathard said he was impressed with Mike Lansford, the Rams’ Plan B free-agent kicker, after a Thursday workout but said he remains unsure the Chargers will be able to sign him.

The workout was designed primarily to test Lansford’s kickoff skills. Beathard said Lansford made his only field goal attempt, a 50-yarder.

Lansford, 31, was left unprotected by the Rams under Plan B and has until April 1 to sign with another team. Phoenix also is interested, but Lansford has said he does not know if he wants to leave the Rams.

Beathard said the Chargers continue to pursue two other kickers--Fuad Reviez, a free agent who was cut by Miami after four seasons last year, and John Carney, a Plan B free agent left unprotected by Tampa Bay.

In other Charger news, John Hinek was appointed director of college scouting.

Hinek, 34, has severed in various administrative capacities since 1978, most recently as the team’s training camp coordinator. He has been scouting college players part-time since 1985.
