A suspected burglar went out on a limb, where police officers and tracking dogs located him, perched on a branch hanging over Horseshoe Lake.

The man fled Thursday after neighbors saw him and an accomplice trying to break into a vacant house, authorities said.

The accomplice was caught. The other suspect ran into the woods and climbed the tree when he saw the officers approaching.

“He was taunting the dogs and the police,” Capt. Jack Fields of the Madison County Sheriff’s Department said. “The limb broke and he fell into the water.”

The man stayed in about 4 feet of chilled water for about 90 minutes until officers found a boat and paddled out to him, said Deputy Gerry Owens.

Both suspects, whose identities were not released, were taken to the Madison County Jail.
