Germany was reunited Monday, at least on the soccer field, when former World Cup players from East and West Germany played on the same team in a charity match.

It was the first time since the postwar division of Germany that a united soccer team from the two German states played together.

A team of former World Cup stars from other nations beat the Germans 3-1.

The match brought together such World Cup stars as Franz Beckenbauer and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge of West Germany, Brazil’s Jairzinho, Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton of England, Juanito of Spain and Alain Giresse of France.

Beckenbauer, Rummenigge, Paul Breitner, Uli Hoennes, Wolfgang Overath and Uwe Seeler from the 1974 West German World Cup team, for this occasion, were teammates of one-time adversary Juergen Sparwasser.

Sparwasser became a hero in East Germany when he scored the goal in a 1-0 victory over West Germany in 1974.
