MEN’S BASKETBALL

Kevin Ahsmuhs, a 6-foot-8 forward from San Diego Mesa College, has made an oral commitment to attend Cal State Fullerton.

Ahsmuhs, a 1988 graduate of Mission Bay High, averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots a game, helping the Olympians to a 12-17 record. He missed his freshman season at Mesa because of a broken foot and plans to petition the Big West Conference and the NCAA in hopes of picking up a third year of eligibility at Fullerton.

BASEBALL

UC Santa Barbara extended its winning streak to 11 games with a 12-0 victory over the University of San Diego at Cunningham Stadium. Former Helix High standout Rich Haar, now a freshman, led the attack with a single, a double and a triple for the Gauchos (23-8). USD fell to 14-17.

After UC San Diego went ahead of Cal State Hayward, 12-11, in the top of the 11th inning, the game was called because of darkness in the bottom of the inning despite UCSD having gotten two quick outs. The game reverted back to the 10th inning and was declared an 11-11 tie.

MEN’S TENNIS

The University of San Diego proved to be too strong for U.S. International as the 22nd-ranked Toreros improved to 16-3 with a 6-1 victory at home. USIU fell to 7-12.

USD’s Jose Luis Noriega defeated Yoram Baron, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and teammate Dan Mattera defeated David Echeandia, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3. USIU’s Mark Schumacher downed J.R. Edwards, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

San Diego State took five of six singles matches and two of three doubles in defeating visiting Nebraska, 7-2. Winning in singles for No. 18 SDSU (10-8) were Michelle Apra, Eva Olivarez, Dorey Brandt, Nicole Storto and Susan Hawke.
