Chet Brewer, 83, of Los Angeles, a Negro Leagues pitcher who has been compared to Satchel Paige, died at Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital in Whittier of complications after surgery.
Brewer played professional baseball for 28 years, beginning in 1925, mainly with the Kansas City Monarchs.
After his playing career, he started a semi-pro team in Central Los Angeles that produced such major league stars as Bobby Tolan, Dock Ellis and Willie Crawford.
Brewer is survived by his wife, Tina, and son, Chester Eugene.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
