Monterey Park : Clerk Turns Over Duties

Share

City Clerk David Barron, who is running for the City Council, said he has turned over election-related functions of his office to his deputy.

His comments came after a resident’s query at a City Council meeting Monday. As the elections officer, Deputy City Clerk Aimee Arakawa is coordinating the April 10 voting with assistance from Martin and Chapman Co., an Anaheim-based elections consulting firm.

Arakawa and the consultants handle the ballots and arrange staffing for the polling booths, but Barron is responsible for matters such as notifying candidates of filing deadlines for campaign contribution reports.

He also has authority to waive late filing penalties, which he recently did for Mayor Patricia Reichenberger and Councilman Barry Hatch because they offered valid explanations for the delays, Barron said.

Barron said he decided to run for the council after considering the potential conflict of interest and concluding that the integrity of the election could be protected.
