A state Department of Education review gave Bellflower Unified School District’s child-care program a top rating among similar programs throughout the state.

The Before and After School Care program, which is run by the district’s child development department, received 99 of a possible 100 points in a recent evaluation by an official from the state Department of Education and two administrators of child development programs. The review team commended the program for organization, family involvement and administrators’ accessibility to staff.

The program was started three years ago to help care for children while their parents are at work. Director Maryann Suggs said Before and After is much more than a baby-sitting service for the 400 elementary children enrolled. It is also an educational and social tool, she said.

“One of the highest compliments paid to us by the review team was their suggestion that our program be used as a model for other schools and districts,” Suggs said. “We hope they will.”
