Lynwood Schools Delay Year-Round Plan for Year

Faced with continuing protests from parents, the Lynwood school board voted this week to delay for at least another year a plan to experiment with year-round schools to help relieve overcrowding in the 15,000-student district.

Hundreds of parents have marched outside a board meeting and have packed public hearings to protest a plan to convert the three largest elementary schools to year-round schedules. Participation would have been voluntary.

Also this week, the board unexpectedly voted to hire acting Supt. Audrey Clarke as superintendent. Clarke, who joined the district in 1977, succeeds LaVoneia Steele, who resigned in January under pressure. The board previously had approved plans to conduct a nationwide search for a superintendent. Terms of Clarke’s contract remain to be worked out, district officials said.
