A rapist who enters women’s homes by posing as a policeman attacked a woman in Coronado on Thursday, police reported.

The man, who is a suspect in rapes in Canada, Oregon, Arizona and California, knocked on the woman’s door, showed her a badge and told her that he needed to use her apartment for narcotics surveillance.

Coronado assault--The Times incorrectly reported Friday that a man posing as a police officer attempted to rape a woman Thursday in her Coronado home. The assault occurred Dec. 26, 1989, and Ronald Dean Hart, 53, of Calgary, Canada, was arrested Jan. 11 in Tucson, Ariz. He was positively identified Thursday, in a video lineup, by the Coronado victim as being her attacker. Hart is being held in Tucson on suspicion of rape. He is also suspected of raping women in Corvallis, Ore.; Sacramento; Riverside; Mission Viejo and Palm Springs.

Once inside, the man handcuffed and assaulted her, then fled after she screamed.

Coronado Police Chief Jerry Boyd said police have identified the rapist as Ronald Dean Hart, a 53-year-old fugitive from the Canadian city of Calgary, where is is wanted for sexual offenses.

He is suspected of raping women in Corvallis, Ore., Sacramento, Riverside, Mission Viejo and Palm Springs in November and December, after posing as a policeman, Boyd said.

Hart was arrested Jan. 11 in Tucson, Ariz., on suspicion of rape. It’s not clear how he escaped from Tucson authorities.
