THE WEEK AHEAD
YOUTH TREATMENT: Optimist Boys’ Home, a youth treatment and rehabilitation center operating since 1906, will break ground Monday for a $1.5-million youth counseling facility in Highland Park. The facility, on North Figueroa Street, will house a transitional day treatment program and a community center for use by non-profit groups.
FREE CLINIC: U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) will officiate at the dedication of the new Los Angeles Free Clinic at 11 a.m. Monday. The clinic, at 8405 Beverly Blvd., provides free health services for low-income people.
HUMAN RIGHTS: Amnesty International will conduct a vigil for human rights from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the Guatemalan Consulate at 1138 Wilshire Blvd. The purpose is to focus public attention on human rights abuses in Guatemala.
GAY CONFERENCE: Pitzer College in Claremont will host a conference on gay and lesbian studies Friday and Saturday. Speakers include historians Allan Berube, of the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay History Project, and Jeffrey Weeks, of Manchester University in England.
