Abandoned Newborn in Good Condition

A newborn baby found abandoned on a roadside in Granada Hills was in good condition after he was rushed to Holy Cross Hospital by police early Saturday morning, hospital officials said.

The 8-pound male infant was discovered on the east side of the intersection at Newcastle and Zelzah avenues. A Granada Hills resident found the crying baby wrapped in a towel with its umbilical cord around its neck, Los Angeles police Sgt. Bill Flores said.

Officers said the baby appeared to be less than an hour old when they rushed him to the hospital, where doctors placed him in a hot bath to raise his temperature from 81 degrees to normal.

“When he first came in, he was in critical condition,” hospital spokeswoman Holly Lyons said. “But he responded very quickly to treatment, and the baby is doing extremely well now.”
