From Times staff and Wire reports

President Robert Mugabe easily won reelection in Zimbabwe’s three-day presidential election. But a low voter turnout dashed his hopes of a massive popular mandate for turning the southern African country into a one-party state. Results from 106 of the 120 districts showed Mugabe getting 82% of the votes, a huge lead over Edgar Tekere, leader of the breakaway Zimbabwe Unity Movement. Voting figures indicated that fewer than half the registered voters went to the polls, and the apparent apathy undercut Mugabe’s dream of banning all opposition parties.
