ANAHEIM : Dumbo Ride Closes After Girl Is Hurt

Disneyland’s Dumbo the Flying Elephant ride remained closed for repair Sunday, a day after the attraction’s mechanical arms crashed to the ground and slightly injured a 13-year-old girl, park officials said.

The teen-ager, who suffered minor bruises, returned to Disneyland Saturday afternoon after being treated at Disneyland’s first aid station and Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center, said park spokeswoman LouAnne Cappiello.

Cappiello said the incident, which occurred at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, was under investigation.

“They’re still inspecting (the ride),” Cappiello said. “I was out there a little while ago and it was shut down. No crews were working on it.”

The ride’s elephant-shaped cars are perched on steel arms that extend from a central pillar. Passengers use levers inside the cars to control their height above the ground.

Cappiello said one of the steel arms gave way, but she said she did not know if the exact cause had been found.

Disneyland officials declined to identify the girl injured in the accident, citing her status as a minor.

The accident was the second in little over a year for the ride, located in the park’s Fantasyland section.

A similar incident occurred March 29, 1989, when a metal bracket connecting a steel arm to one of the ride’s cars came loose, park officials said. The passenger aboard that car also suffered minor bruises, Cappiello said.
