Nation In Brief : NEW YORK : Buffalo Tries to Save Transit Lines

Officials in Buffalo, N.Y., called an emergency meeting in an effort to restart the city’s bus and subway system, shut down Sunday morning for lack of money. It was unclear if the proposed rescue could get the system running by this morning in time for the system’s 120,000 daily commuters. The 6-year-old, 6-mile subway and network of buses serving Buffalo and Niagara Falls made their last runs after the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority ran out of money and voted to shut down. The authority, which had run out of operating funds, became the first federally-subsidized mass transit system to fail in the nation. Gov. Mario M. Cuomo said that until a long-term source is found, there is nothing the state can do to help.
