SAN FRANCISCO — A bronze replica of the “Goddess of Democracy” statue that youthful Chinese protesters carried last year during their demonstrations in Beijing’s Tian An Men Square will become part of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s permanent collection of works.
The commission voted unanimously Monday to accept the replica, being made by a group of local sculptors. The 800-pound, 10-foot replica will cost about $40,000 and will stand in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square after it is completed.
“This will be the first permanent, bronze re-creation of the Goddess of Democracy statue anywhere in the world,” said Tom Marsh, leader of the team of sculptors.
