WASHINGTON — First Lady Barbara Bush, who has undergone radiation treatment for Graves’ disease, said today that her condition is better and she no longer suffers from double vision.
“Last week was the first week I was seeing without double vision,” she told reporters at the White House.
Graves’ disease is a thyroid condition that makes a person’s eyes bulge and affects the vision. In February, the First Lady underwent 10 days of treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
“I think the radiation worked,” Mrs. Bush said.
She made the comments after surprising tourists on the first floor of the White House by conducting a brief ceremony to receive a new historical book on the presidency.
During her brief chat with reporters, the First Lady also scoffed at a Newsweek magazine report that President Bush can be found in the upstairs family quarters watching the evening news and evaluating the news anchors.
“That’s baloney,” she said emphatically. “I’ve never heard him evaluate the newscasts.”
