California IN BRIEF : SAN FRANCISCO : Woman Finds Case of Dynamite in Yard

A woman digging in her garden uncovered something unexpected: a case of dynamite. Residents of the Bernal Heights neighborhood were evacuated while a bomb squad removed the explosive stick by stick, police said. The case was discovered under a slab of concrete and contained 60 to 100 sticks of “very unstable” dynamite estimated to be about 20 years old, officers said. “It is enough to blow up about two city blocks,” a police officer said. It was not known why the dynamite was buried, police said.
