Former Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. has a more than 3-to-1 lead over Republican and Democratic rivals in his independent bid for governor, a poll released today showed. The University of Connecticut survey was the first since Gov. William A. O’Neill announced March 20 that he would not run for reelection, and Weicker apparently gained from the Democratic governor’s withdrawal.

Of 500 polled adults, 39% preferred Weicker, even though the former three-term Republican senator has not begun active campaigning. Another 12% preferred Rep. John G. Rowland, the Republican front-runner; 9% preferred Democrat Rep. Bruce A. Morrison, and 40% were undecided.
