From Times staff and Wire reports

A poll showed Ann Richards holding a slight lead over rival Jim Mattox as they campaigned for the final day before Tuesday’s Democratic runoff for governor of Texas. The winner will face oilman-rancher Clayton W. Williams in the November election to succeed retiring Republican Gov. Bill Clements. The poll in Sunday’s editions of the Dallas Morning News and the Houston Chronicle indicated Richards, 56, the state treasurer, was supported by 44% of Democrats who said they plan to vote. Mattox, 46, an ex-congressman and two-term attorney general, drew 38%, while 16% were undecided and 3% said they would not support either candidate.
