Doane’s Third Homer Rallies USD to Victory

Rick Doane hit a three-run home run--his third of the game--in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of San Diego an 8-7 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran (11-9) Tuesday. Doane’s other home runs were with the bases empty in the first and fifth innings. Doane, a junior and Clairemont High graduate, has nine home runs.

Freshman Kevin Herde, a San Pasqual graduate, had three hits, including two doubles, for USD (17-22).

U.S. International snapped a 13-game losing streak by defeating UC Irvine, 12-6, at USIU. USIU (10-31-1), led by a two-run homer by Geoff Martinez, came from a 5-4 deficit by scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Beto Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the first inning to give USIU a 3-1 lead. Irvine is 23-16.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers were notified by the Indianapolis Colts that they will receive the Colts’ third-round draft pick this year as part of the trade that sent linebacker Chip Banks to Indianapolis midway through last season.

The Colts had the option of giving the Chargers their third-round pick this year or their second-round choice in 1991. Tuesday was the deadline for notifying the Chargers of their decision. The Chargers now have two picks in the third round.
