Zapata to Open Latino Arts Festival

Broadway and television actress Carmen Zapata will open the 1990 Orange County Latino Performing Arts Festival at Cal State Fullerton on April 21.

Zapata, a three-time Emmy nominee, will deliver a keynote address at 10 a.m. to open a free symposium entitled, “Latinos and Mainstream Theater: An Analytical and Futuristic Perspective.” The symposium, which will run until 12:30 p.m., will be at the University Center Theater.

Julie Carmen, who appeared in the film “The Milagro Beanfield War,” will be a guest speaker at the symposium.

Panelists will include Leo Garcia, an actor in the television soap opera “Santa Barbara”; Jose Cruz Gonzalez, director of the Hispanic Playwrights Project at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa; Raul Moncada, director of Teatro Meta at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego; and Rick Najera, an actor-playwright with the Los Angeles-based comedy troupe, Latins Anonymous.

A concert including pre-Hispanic Mexican dancers, a Ballet Folklorico and a mariachi band, among other acts, will be at 8 p.m. at the University Center Titan Hall. Tickets for the concert are $5. Seating is limited.
