Cyndi Gallagher, UCLA women’s swim coach, has been named Pacific 10 Conference Coach of the Year by a vote of conference coaches. Gallagher led the Bruins to fifth place in the NCAA championships, the best finish in school history, despite having only six swimmers in the meet. UCLA swimmers earned nine All-American certificates and broke eight school records at the NCAAs. Gallagher has been UCLA’s head coach for two years and was an assistant from 1983 to 1988. She was an All-American Bruin swimmer from 1980 through 1982.

UCLA gymnast Chris Waller is one of five finalists for the IBM/George Nissen Award, presented annually to the nation’s outstanding senior college gymnast. A member of the 1989 U.S. national team, he was the 1989 NCAA co-champion on the pommel horse.

Santa Monica High School junior midfielder Carlos Suarez was selected to the All-CIF Southern Section second team, and Brentwood School senior midfielder Michael Roach made the second team in the Small Schools Division.
