Residents Grapple With the Drought

Share

I am sure letter-writer Steve Garcia (April 2) is not alone in his sentiment that “if you love California, let your water run over the curb and into the gutter.” But his belief that water conservation encourages population growth is patently false.

California and other parts of the Southwest are experiencing an unusual fourth year of drought. Because of this, we need a concerted water conservation effort simply to support the people who live here now, much less any added population in the future.

Water conservation is the efficient use of a precious natural resource that is absolutely essential to life. Water also is vital to the economy and environment.

Squandering this precious resource will only result in an unreliable water supply, lost jobs, economic damage, higher water rates and a degradation of our enviable lifestyle.
