One Goossen Instead of None May Be in Nunn’s Corner Tonight

A possible reconciliation between International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Michael Nunn and his manager, Dan Goossen, seemed to be under way late Friday night, on the eve of Nunn’s title fight here with Marlon Starling.

Nunn, Dan and Joe Goossen and Nunn’s longtime adviser, Bob Surkein, were in a lengthy meeting Friday night. One Mirage hotel executive said he had been told by Nunn that Joe Goossen, Nunn’s estranged trainer, would be in his corner tonight.

“Mike told me they’d talked, that Joe would be in the corner, along with Cassius Green,” said Bob Halloran, director of sports for the Mirage.

An angry Nunn walked out of his training camp March 17 after a day of haggling over new contract terms. Nunn then said he was finished with the Goossens, and hired Green, a Los Angeles trainer, to work with him for the Starling fight.

“Mike told me he never wanted to lose Joe as his trainer, but that he understood Joe not wanting to work with him anymore out of loyalty to his brother,” Halloran said.
