So, T. Solliday (Letters, April 1) finds appalling the depiction in “The Handmaid’s Tale” of fundamentalist Christians. The movie shows a fundamentalist ruling class that forces women who oppose its views to bear children.

If the goals of the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon and his Traditional Values Coalition are any indication, we could one day see something like “The Handmaid’s Tale” come to pass. Listen to his wife, Beverly, defending discrimination against single people: “Single people aren’t providing the same stability to our country (as married people), they’re not providing offspring, they carry more diseases” (Los Angeles Times, “Report Finds Widespread Bias Against Unmarrieds,” March 29).

Sheldon’s group is working hard in Orange County and elsewhere to promote its anti-freedom values. It seeks to ban certain books and sex education and to get followers elected to public office at the local levels.
