Mayor Kathy Whitmire will leave her Porsche at home one day this week and ride the bus to work.

It will be her contribution to Alternative Transportation Day, when environmentalists urge motorists to park their cars and use public transportation. The program is part of Earth Day activities.

The mayor will join the regulars aboard the Metro bus that stops one block from her Woodland Heights home.

Metropolitan Transit Authority spokeswoman Carol Boudreaux said the bus should drop Whitmire within two blocks of City Hall.

“She won’t have to walk far,” Boudreaux said.

The mayor has urged Houston business executives to join the daylong alternative transportation movement.

“We’re asking as many people as possible to take car pools, van pools or to ride the bus,” she said.

Whitmire will ride the bus on Thursday, the same day Metro does its part for Earth Day by offering free bus service on all routes.
