Joni Smith, chairman of the Fashion Circle, and Ann Johnson, chairman of the Costume Council (she also is co-executive chairman of the big L.A. Alive! weekend with Joy Fein June 1-3 at the Music Center), are collaborating again.

They’ve persuaded fashion designer Carolyne Roehm to present her fall 1990 collection April 30 at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Later that evening they will host a black-tie dinner/dancing soiree at the Bistro to honor Roehm, who’s also president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

California must be the place to be. Friday, New York interior designer/author/artist Mark Hampton lectures at the Music Academy of the West luncheon in Santa Barbara at Red Lion Resort. Paige Rense, editor-in-chief, Architectural Digest, is the co-host.

And why would French couturier Emanuel Ungaro become a founder of the Music Center (minimum gift of $50,000)? Because Winnie and Peter Schweitzer (she owns Ungaro boutique on Rodeo) are super Music Center fans and have influenced him. The Schweitzers host a black-tie dinner for Ungaro May 9 in the Music Center’s Grace Ford Salvatori Room.

Also in the social whirl last week, Mary Hart and her husband, Burt Sugarman, entertained and revealed that Wells Fargo Bank will underwrite the L.A. Alive! gala dinner dance they chair June 2.

SAY YES: Former President Ronald Reagan’s appearance wasn’t planned until the morning of the “Just Say No” Los Angeles County first annual “Green Ribbon Dinner” at the Biltmore.

But then word came that he’d said yes and would be there to see wife Nancy receive the Green Ribbon tribute in the Crystal Ballroom. Both of them joined chairman Bob Hope, Charlie Jones and Jim Hill on stage. Said Nancy: “It’s nice to have my roommate here.” In the audience to watch and applaud the cherubic St. Bede youth choir were Beth Polson, Libby and Jim Brown, Jess and Phyllis Marlow.

As for novel, Carolyn Bennett tells us that the Los Angeles Library Assn. has a truly novel event--stay home and read a book during National Library Week, but give gala-ciously to the Los Angeles Public Library.
