Growing numbers of voters think Sen. Alan Cranston should resign over his involvement in the Lincoln Savings & Loan scandal, a poll said today.

The 75-year-old Democrat continues to lose backing from the public, despite an aggressive campaign to blame the press and former chief thrift regulator Edwin Gray for his problems, California Poll Director Mervin Field said.

In a poll taken between March 26 and April 6, 47% of the respondents said Cranston should resign before his term ends in 1992; 32% said he should not resign, and 21% had no opinion.

Two months ago, 62% said Cranston should finish his term, while 25% believed that he should quit.

The latest California Poll also said Cranston would only get support for reelection from 15% of the voters as opposed to 66% against giving him another term in office.

Cranston’s popularity has plummeted since disclosures about his involvement in the Lincoln Savings & Loan scandal began last year.
