Planting Trees

Share

I would like to commend both President Bush and Mayor Bradley for suggesting that citizens plant trees. As a concerned citizen and a university biology major, I would like to make some additional suggestions on planting trees: (1) Favored locations for trees ought to be where natural mulching by dropped leaves around the base of the tree can occur. (2) Trees should be selected carefully so that the tree when fully grown will not be too large for the location, in order to minimize trimming over the life of the tree. (3) The tree ought to be a variety that can get all the water it needs without any help from man after it is well rooted.

I believe we are at the dawn of a new era, especially in California, where dumps will be a last resort and where the water in our reservoirs will be valued much more highly than at present.
