NATION : North DAR Speech Upsets Some
Some members of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution plan to stay away from a scheduled speech to the group by Iran-Contra scandal figure Oliver North, a spokeswoman said today.
Jane Hemphill, public relations director, said the group’s offices have received some calls from members upset that North was selected to address the annual “national defense evening” Wednesday at the invitation of conservative Phyllis Schlafly.
North, who was convicted last year for his part in the Reagan Administration arms-for-hostages scandal, was scheduled to deliver a speech titled “Trust, Commitment and Family,” Hemphill said.
