THE SIDELINES : McEnroe, Wilander Quit Tourney
John McEnroe and Mats Wilander have withdrawn from next week’s $1-million Monte Carlo Open.
McEnroe has shoulder and back problems, which also caused him to withdraw from this week’s Philips Open in Nice, Monte Carlo. He has not played a tournament since being eliminated in the second round at the U.S. Pro Indoor in Philadelphia in February.
Wilander decided to spend time with his ailing father, according to the Assn. of Tennis Professionals tour manager, Vittorio Selmi. It will be the first time he will miss Monte Carlo since 1983.
