New Charges Filed in Threats to Bush
A Glendale man was indicted Monday for a second time on charges of threatening President Bush, four days after a federal judge dismissed an original indictment as too vague.
Karl Schmidt, 44, was accused of telephoning the White House and the Secret Service in Los Angeles on Nov. 9 and threatening Bush and former President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy.
U.S. District Court Judge Terry J. Hatter Jr. on Monday agreed to release Schmidt on $20,000 bond if he enrolled in a residential alcohol treatment program. But Hatter ordered Schmidt to remain in federal custody for violating probation in Colorado, where he was convicted in 1986 of negligent homicide.
His attorney was trying to obtain Schmidt’s release from a no-bond, Colorado arrest warrant so Schmidt can enter the treatment program, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
