Firefighters rescued a 78-year-old man from his burning house Tuesday.

Firefighters found Morris Watson unconscious in a bedroom and pulled him to safety, Garden Grove Battalion Chief Bernard Heimos said.

Watson was hospitalized for smoke inhalation at Medical Center of Garden Grove Hospital, where he was reported in guarded condition.

Neighbors called 911 about 6:45 p.m. after seeing smoke coming from the back of Watson’s house, on the 9600 block of Skylark Lane.

“At first I thought it was a barbecue,” said Frank Cannon, who lives next door. “But soon the smoke was 20 feet in the air and we knew something was wrong.”

Seventeen firefighters worked about 20 minutes putting out the blaze, which appeared to have been started in the kitchen, Heimos said.

The fire cause about $125,000 worth of damage and involved about a third of the house, Heimos said.
