THOUSAND OAKS : Curbside Recycling Program Approved
The Thousand Oaks City Council on Tuesday night joined a growing number of Ventura County cities in approving a curbside recycling plan.
The council voted unanimously to initiate a voluntary glass, paper and aluminum recycling program for about 3,000 households. The program eventually will be expanded to include about 30,000 households.
City officials estimate that the program could begin in May. Meanwhile, the city is considering building a recycling facility to separate glass, plastic and other materials. It is also devising a plan to turn tree trimmings and other yard wastes into compost.
A recent law gives communities until July, 1991, to initiate recycling projects.
Simi Valley, the first city in the county to adopt a recycling plan, recently expanded its program to serve about 13,000 households scattered citywide.
Meanwhile, Camarillo, Oxnard and Ojai are considering instituting recycling projects. Ventura implemented a program on Oct. 9.
