Mattel Inc.: The Hawthorne-based toy maker said first-quarter profit totaled $8.4 million, almost double that of a year ago. Sales rose 20% to $234 million. The company credited strong demand for its core products, which include Barbie, Hot Wheels, He-Man and Disney toys.
